From the people who brought you American Idol — it’s Philippine Idol! ABC Channel 5 has begun its search for the next Pinoy singing sensation. Megamall auditions had 150 young (average 17 - 24 year olds) )belting their souls out to the crowd at SM Megamall on May 15. It took several hours. (I’ve included a photo here.)

Philippine Idol Megamall

There was no music to go along with their vocals but in my opinion most of the performances were quite good. The Pinoy accents were clearly evident when some contestants took the stage with English songs - which was quite distracting. A few sang Tagalog songs, and were especially good at it. Others sang Christian songs - though a bit poorly by my reckoning (personally, if you’re going to worship God in a show called Philippine IDOL, I don’t think you should win.) I probably missed the hard rocking singers, but there were contestants who looked funky, glamorous, or just plain weird. Of course the most applause went to a lady who, upon reaching an extremely high note, screeched and lost her voice.

YEAH! Now that’s entertainment!
