These Weeks According to Joel – Book Sale, Toycon, INK Exhibit

Past few weeks have been largely a rest for me. A good time to hit the weights, and build a good habit.

Minor emergency surfaced on the 120-page project. But nothing too difficult.

I got to visit the Powerbooks warehouse sale. A lot of fiction and non-fiction. A good number of business books. Choices were limited but very cheap. I bought an book on stock illustrations – it’s more like a portfolio book if you approach it as an artist for roughly 300Php (that’s like US$6). One buyer was able buy 10 or so business books from the warehouse for the price of one in retail.

I also got to visit the 2006 ToyCon at Megamall. Largely to demo products from Wacom and Corel’s Painter. But due to the mess of activities, contests, and bands, the demo ended up shoved really late for me. It’s everyone’s loss! (Including mine.) Next time, I may have a booth up with some friends and distribute Pixel Pintura flyers. I did get to see many familiar friendly faces, so it was worth the entrance fee.

I was discussing with flash animator extraordinaire Enrick Geronia how these local pop-culture cons are largely geared to the consumer. Sponsors are more likely to pitch up tent when they know they can sell to hundreds in their target market. While consumer-centric cons are a blast (the music too loud to do any serious industry negotiations), I wish there were solid industry-centric cons relating to gaming, illustration, comics, animation, cinema. I think the recent Arts & Music con was a good example of that… though I do believe it could’ve been more desirable if technology was a bigger part of it

Ang INK’s 15th anniversary exhibit has the privilege to open at One Workshop Gallery
on August 18. One Workshop opened just this year, and it should be an exciting new venue to exhibit in! We bring the exhibit to Marikina’s Riverbanks Mall on September 9. Our anniversary exhibit will be featuring Filipino mythological creatures & characters in a familiar Pinoy environment. Watch out for my work!
