These Weeks According to Joel – PR , Painting, P.O.D.

Public relations and painting, two opposite poles but happening on the same week. Just like the rain & shine weather we’ve been having here in Metro Manila.

Preparations for the 15th Anniversary INK Exhibit seem to be going at a crawl. On the P.R. & Sponsorships side, we have contacted potential sponsors regarding our event – but then the followups are inevitably long and drawn out exercises of patience and tact. I don’t know what the other committees are doing, but anxiety is starting to get to me. I’d much rather be painting or coming up with wild ideas.

With the upcoming CAST colors being done by Arnold Arre, I’ve had time to focus on the Night Monkeys cover (the publisher really likes it), as well as to try out on some new projects.

Finding a comic book color project that I can wholeheartedly focus on isn’t easy. The price has to be right. The workload has to be bearable. The clients have to be professional. Gone are the days where I worked for a “percentage of profits (if any)”. It does help if the comic book has a purpose and a ministry.

Hired painting mercenary as I am, I have to get around to illustrating something of my own. I have spied many foreign illustrators that have published their own books. I don’t just mean comic books, but also art books, poetry books, even sketch books. Print-on-demand (POD) costs seem to be much lower over there – just visit :Ka-blam to get an idea. There’s always an option of having a personal exhibit – yet another PR & Painting endeavor by itself – though I have no idea what sort of rewards come with such an endeavor.

For now, I’d just be happy to get over all this PR stuff, so I can concentrate on what I do best.
