On a scale of 1 to 5. 5 being the most busy. October would be a 4. Production actually didn’t give me time for collection! So while technically I did not make any significant income in October, there’ll be a windfall of cash on November. No worries.
I’ve been asked to do 3 tryouts for 3 different. projects. 2 to illustrate children’s books and 1 to color a comic book. For the former, I must say it really helps to be in Ang INK’s catalogue. The illustration I have there is getting me work on “historical” books. Is it my niche? We’ll see, because one of those books I’ll be trying out for is slightly more contemporary. But generally it appears that the portfolio piece you have in any catalogue will determine what sort of projects you will be offered. This is part of the advice Mela Bolinao mentioned to INK previously regarding portfolios.
Alamat ng Butiki illustrations are done. Attached here is a prefinal look at the cover spread. 1st week was waiting for approval, 3 weeks were for production. I’d say the book’s story requires some PG (Parental Guidance), and the art is of the sort that just DEFIES the cute and graphic nature of the current 2005 selection of local children’s books. I don’t know how many parents would like to give their kids a scary children’s book for Christmas. Also I have this impression very young children will not easily take to characters that aren’t a collection of fun & simple shapes. Which we can say is a good thing for this story because it IS PG-rated.
By the way. Artista Jac Ting Lim now does her stripping for a global audience. Check out Jac Strips for You., now available for your compatible mobile phone. Other artists, including myself tried to sell mobile phone comics locally - but that didn’t really pan out. I’m glad Jac managed to get a better deal!
Publisher Adarna House is looking for story submissions from the Philippines for its Anino imprint of graphic novels. While this may mean that the imprint’s first two published books have been received well in the market, I have doubts if they’ll go for another supernatural one. Because they’ve already had Arnold Arre’s Mythology Class done.

If you think about it, the original fairytales were a more disturbing than what is usual now. If you read the original Grimm’s tales, they were really…grim. Crows plucking eyeballs… Even a stepsister cutting of her toe to fit into the glass slipper. Definitely not cute!
